Not an entirely vegan campus – but close
The majority of the students who are vegan at DNS do it for political reasons. Or because they would like to actively contribute to a more sustainable world, or because they don’t want to line the pockets of big food industries, or because they care about animal rights, or because they care about all of these reasons, and some others.

At DNS, the students are interested in all sorts of different matters: sports, arts, travelling, people, politics, science, mechanics, nature, and so many other things. However, one thing that has become more and more clear at DNS is that the students are increasingly interested in food and sustainable lifestyles and diets. Thus, a vegan lifestyle has gained momentum at our college during the last years.
Vegans welcome
The majority of the students who are vegan at DNS do it for political reasons. Or because they would like to actively contribute to a more sustainable world, or because they don’t want to line the pockets of big food industries, or because they care about animal rights, or because they care about all of these reasons, and some others.
Veganism is apparently, more than a diet and, at DNS, the students share knowledge regarding the topic in different ways. By being directly involved in cooking vegan food, and by screening documentaries to create awareness about it, or simply by making their vegan lifestyle visible and noticed.
Vegan lifestyle at Another Kind of School
At Another Kind of School, such as ours, differences and diversity are important thus everybody’s diet is respected, since many of the students do decide to opt for not having a vegan diet – keeping their usual food habits that include meat and dairy products. Everybody here has space to contribute to a better world in the way that they feel is appropriate.
During a normal week at DNS, the students have their meals together with the whole community in a place that we call “The Big Kitchen”. Every single day, the food is served having into consideration the different diets of every student and teacher: veganism, vegetarianism, gluten-free, lactose intolerant, meat eaters, and those who simply don’t eat certain foods by choice – for example for religious reasons.
A vegan lifestyle and a balanced diet without dairy products has gained more and more attention in later years and many people appreciate a rich and nutritious meal, filled with vegetables and cereals, and a clean conscience.
Horticulture on our almost vegan campus
Also, we grow our own organic vegetables at the campus, at our garden farms. In fact, the curriculum at DNS includes the subject “Horticulture”, since we believe that access to home grown organic food is a priority. You can read more about it here.
